No one in the early 1960's thought Nabakov's novel 'Lolita' could be made into a film. The protagonist of Lolita is a pedophile lusting after 'nymphets' - specifically, Lolita. Kubrick had his sights set of making Lolita as soon as the wrap was put on his previous film 'Spartacus.' Kubrick managed to pull off Lolita and it was greeted with articles like this one from Life.
